Sandy held Pepperâs arm as they went up the few stairs of the cabin. He liked that and put his arm around her as they went into the living room. She smiled at him, they sat on the couch.
âHow about that drink?â she asked him. âIt sounds good to me now.â
âOK.â
She got up and went over to the small bar, which Pepper only saw now for the first time. She was poking around, looking at the bottles. She opened the mini-fridge. âThis looks good, how about some champagne?â
âIs that what you want?â
âYeah, that sounds so good,â she said.
âOK, then letâs have it.â
She poured them each a glass and came back, sitting right next to him on the couch. They clinked glasses in a silent toast. Pepper savored a mouthful, thinking how bubbly and cold it was. He shivered a little but felt the warmth of the alcohol beginning in him. She felt his shiver and laughed. He laughed too and took another mouthful. No shiver this time, it went down true and he felt the warmth of the alcohol stronger now. Sandy took another drink now too and leaned in closer to him. He looked at her and thought how pretty she was, with her wide smile and her deep brown eyes shining at him that way. He hadnât felt that in a while. He reached out and ran his palm across her cheek and back into her hair. He waited to see if she would pull back at all, but she didnât. She waited for him. With his heart suddenly pounding, he pulled her to him and kissed her.
They paused and did it again. Slowly the kiss grew. His arms were around her and he could feel hers gently closing around him. It was electric for him. He kissed more strongly now, and he could feel her returning it. His hands explored her back, her neck, her hair, pulling her to him more tightly, feeling her body against his. He pulled back for a few seconds to steal a look at her. He was thinking maybe sheâd want to stop. But no -- she opened her eyes, smiled at him, and pulled him back to her. He kissed her again deeply and gave himself up now to the rush of it all.
Time stopped for them. They lay on the couch wrapped up together kissing and touching for a long time. Finally, Pepper felt her disengage and pulling at his hands. He opened his eyes. It was almost dark now, and the room was full of shadows. She was smiling at him again, her deep brown eyes still shining. âCome on,â she was saying. She pulled his arms again. âCome on.â
He stood up with her, his knees feeling a bit unsteady. She led him off to the bedroom. It was in the back of the cottage. Outside the windows was the hillside, full of pine trees covered with long soft needles, turning bluish in the spreading twilight. The windows were open a bit and all he could hear was the breeze rustling and blowing through them.
